Juicy

Juicy

by Indigo Velvet

@INDIGOVELVET_ Edinburgh based Quartet INDIGO VELVET, described as producing Tropical Indie, have been creating a stir in the Scottish music scene since forming in summer 2013. The band began establishing themselves in their home city, Edinburgh, playing with touring bands such as Young Kato, Honeyblood, The Hearts, before venturing off on a 'Hit the Road' tour in summer 2014. The band have since performed across the UK, gaining radio plays, widespread support slots and a growing loyal fan base. I saw them recently, supporting Model Aeroplanes and they were excellent - finishing their set to massed chants of "IV" "IV" Review soon, once I fix the blog!

When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky

When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky

by Lucius (Dylan cover)

When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky is a Bob Dylan song from his 1985 Empire Burlesque album, however the version on the album was perhaps not the best version - "A significant outtake from the Empire Burlesque sessions was released on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961-1991. This version of "When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky," featured Roy Bittan on piano and Steve Van Zandt on guitar...an apocalyptic vision bristling with drama, sung without restraint, could have provided Dylan with another epic. "Instead, Dylan re-recorded another version for the album. Music critic Tim Riley argued, "the Van Zandt take...has such an undeniably raunchy attitude (and guitar solo) you wonder why Dylan stuck with the lifeless version that makes Empire Burlesque drift off on side two." This is Lucius' take on the track which was released on a "A Tribute To Bob Dylan In The 80s" compilation, often part of their live set and I like it :-)

Satisfy My Soul

Satisfy My Soul

by David Knowles

David Knowles @david_knowles_m is a distinctive vocalist and songwriter based in Edinburgh with a growing international social media following. Lyrically, David draws inspiration from classic writers including William Blake, Oscar Wilde, Jack Kerouac and Hunter Thompson. Years spent travelling the world (including Latin America, Asia and Europe) have provided a rich vein of inspiration for his songwriting and familiarity with a wide range of instruments. His songwriting has been variously compared to leading contemporary singer songwriters including Damien Rice, Jose Gonzalez and Fink as well as Californian alternative rock veterans Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. 2015 promises to be a big year for David Knowles with the launch of his debut album “Footsteps” on 9th March at the Edinburgh Voodoo Rooms. Christmas In A Chinese Restaurant

Christmas In A Chinese Restaurant

by Diamond Rugs

I know this is a little unseasonal, but I'm off to the snowy Austrian Alps tomorrow and this seemed quite fun - in a very slit-your-wrists non-cheerful way :-) "I ate Chinese food on Christmas day you kicked me out cause I told the kids that Santa's sleigh did not exist I was drunk and you got pissed but anyway.... have a very Merry Christmas Is it worth it now to walk on back? I've walked on by a dozen times and that's no lie my lips are chapped my nose is red my tears are ice but anyway.... Feliz Navidad and all that. - I'm walking through the town square singing Christmas carols to myself It's so lonely and it's cold and i cannot feel my toes but it feels more like i'm burnin' in hell Hows the turkey hows the ham I can't finish my Moo goo gai pan but that's not all they cut me off from alcohol but anyways ... you go on and deck the halls"

Mercy, Mercy

Mercy, Mercy

by Don Covay

RIP Don Covay - Covay gave Aretha Franklin one of her biggest hits with Chain of Fools in 1968, a song he had written 15 years earlier. His singing style also influenced Mick Jagger, as seen in the Rolling Stones cover of his song Mercy Mercy. Covay started out in music in a gospel group with his siblings at school, before joining doo-wop group Rainbows. While trying to make it as a solo artist and singer-songwriter he spent time as Little Richard's chauffeur and warm-up act. His first chart hit came in 1961 with Pony Time. The track, however, became an even bigger hit when Chubby Checker recorded his own version a year later in 1962, topping the pop and R&B charts. This pattern continued with this song Mercy Mercy, which he recorded in 1964 with a then-unknown Jimi Hendrix on guitar, which went into the top 40.

Weatherman

Weatherman

by Randolph's Leap

Only 4 more days of Dryathlon® to go - raising money for Cancer Research UK https://www.justgiving.com/Scott-Wilson-dryathlete20152015/ This track highlights Adam Ross’s lyrics, which manage to be both humorous and heartbreaking. These are particularly evident on this track ‘Weatherman’, a song about a man’s petty assessments of an ex-girlfriend’s new man. Any song that includes the putdown, “He talks like a weatherman,” deserves to be widely heard. Even better, though, are the lines, “You said, “he’s a barrister actually/ I said, “Does that mean he makes coffee?”

All About That Bass

All About That Bass

by Meghan Trainor

You will probably have heard the slick release version of this (http://youtu.be/7PCkvCPvDXk) but I had heard and liked Ms Trainor's first live acoustic version (http://youtu.be/IyVQtPkMM0M) some time ago. Don't get me wrong, I like the studio version, but I worry that the talent she obviously has is going to be diluted and perhaps lost in the record label treadmill that she's now on. Anyway - this is a good version from a recent live radio session.

I know I've posted this @ilovelucius track once before, but I'm still buzzing from seeing Lucius live in Dublin on Saturday - so no apologies for posting again. It was lovely to see the band surprised and smiling at the level of crowd participation - amazing gig! Much more interactive that this recording from Later with Jools. My favourite moment in the gig was when Lucius abandoned the stage and pushed their way into the centre of the packed sweaty crowd to perform the last two numbers completely unamplified - beautiful finish.
