Q Lazzarus

by Goodbye Horses

Only 5 days left of TIMJ left and so many good songs left to post. I'll be honest, I only know this song from the GTA soundtrack so despite how good it still sounds since it's release 30 years ago it makes me think of driving around Vice City with the top down ready to grease some fools with my SMG.

Blur The Technicolor (Poker From Stud To Strip Mix (Explicit))

by White Zombie

I used to have this terrible habit of buying remix albums (why were they so popular in the 90's?) and instantly regretting it. Getting Super Sexy Swinging Sounds was not one of those times. Yes it's terribly dated but at the same time there's something really charming about it.

Shirley MacLaine

Shirley MacLaine

by Helmet

Before Deftones did their avant garde metal thing there was Helmet. Of course I think they did it better too. I fell in love with the band hard when they released Meantime in '92 and went back to the previous two, this being one of the many highlights from Born Annoying. Listening back now it strikes me as a massive surprise that I didn't end up a huge shoegaze nerd instead of a metal head.

Everything's Cool

Everything's Cool

by Pop Will Eat Itself

1992 to 96 were the last great year for the Industrial music I loved. Pitchshifter were going through their Desensitised and WWW period, Nine Inch Nails were releasing heavy hitters like The Downward Spiral, Meat Beat Manifesto dragged the blinding Subliminal Sandwich out from lord alone knows where, The Young Gods dropped Only Heaven, Godflesh had Selfless and Songs of Love and Hate on constant rotation in my bedroom, and then the previously comedic crusties PWEI unleashed the unbelievably on-point album Dos Dedos Mis Amigos with instant classics such as Ich Bin Ein Auslander and Everything's Cool. It still resonates politically twenty one years later…

Miss Ice Cream Cool

Miss Ice Cream Cool

by Kung Pao

Very few bands manage to embody that "nice 'n sleazy" sound quite like Kung Pao did. Miss Ice Cream Cool is the closer to their 2002 album Sheboygan. The laid back rhythm, the heavier than hell guitars, the banshee whine of the mid-range feedback and the whisky burned vocals all add up something still incredibly fresh and dangerous.

Day One

Day One

by Lumbar

Today's Jam comes to you from the swelling and strangely uplifting choral swamp of Michael Scheidt's mind. It's bassy, loose, unsettling but wonderful. Some of the tracks even have steel lap guitars adding to the feeling of broken Americana. Yob for people in a hurry. Turn it up good and loud. Five out of five buffalo skulls littering up a dusty plain.

Lullaby

Lullaby

by The Cure

I remember being about 12 or 13 when I first heard this in the cassette collection of my big sister Helen's then boyfriend Robert. I didn't really know what to do with myself when it finished apart from play it again. And again. It's sinister, beguiling, and sensuous. Although it didn't turn me fully goth it made me appreciate that you could be dark without necessarily being heavy. Despite what they would like you to think all dyed-in-the-wool metallers are a little bit goth. Just the blackened tip.

Lack of Comprehension

Lack of Comprehension

by Death

That slow jazz build-up, that middle eastern vibe, the laid back HOLY SHIT WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! Somehow Chuck et al manage to keep that middle eastern thing interwoven with some of the densest arrangements and sounds of the day. On "Human" Death suddenly matured from competent but ultimately middling 80's thrash act to fully insane technical death metal act at the top of not just their game but everyone's in what appeared to be an instant. What an incredible start to the 90's. You're sorely missed Chuck.

She's Unreal

She's Unreal

by Meat Beat Manifesto

I don't think of a more unsettling electronic act than Meat Beat Manifesto. Stuttering, mumbling, apocalyptic with occult and political themes, it ticks a lot of boxes. I was lucky enough to win a pair of tickets to see them in Berlin a few years ago at the Volksbühne, the former DDR's cultural event centre. Despite the dark dub and dense dance it was a seated event and I couldn't get up and shake my money maker. I did get to share it with my best friend though…

Haliod Xerrox Copy 1

by Alva Noto

I love the way that the music fades in and out of the white noise and static that Carsten creates. You think it would limit the options available to him as a musician but it seems to free him to be subtle about the choices he makes when building the textures in his work. I'd kill to see him at Corsica Studios or Café Oto but it appears he hasn't played since last February.

Cream Live Two

Cream Live Two

by Various mixed by James Lavelle

This takes me back to being about 19 and just having moved out of home for the first time. It's very much of the hip-hop drenched big beat era that was huge in the UK at the time. Don't expect anything rave-y, that ship had sailed and wasn't due to make a comeback for a few more years, drum and bass was fresh but still relatively underground and dub was still all about roots and culture, unsullied by dubstep. This mix stands as a reaction to the hard dance of the previous years and is a very textured and interesting trip through the sound of the mid-90s. Put your feet up, turn up the bass and enjoy the ride.

Sick Things

Sick Things

by Alice Cooper

"Sick Things" is taken from the Alice Cooper's 1973 album Billion Dollar Babies and was my first proper introduction to his work if you discount Poison which was in the charts a few years prior. This track is heavy and sleazy in all the right ways and steers clear of his more mainstream rock clichés. I also recommend "I Love the Dead" from the same album for the fact that it openly touts necrophelia as a valid sexual outlet in a genuinely disturbing yet funny manner. Honest.

Better Than God

Better Than God

by The Frogs

Getting in your face (and mostly in your eyes) is how I like to remember The Frogs. This is a departure for them in that it's not about homosexual bedroom antics or goats (honestly) but it's still very confrontational in theme and delivery. This is from their 2001 album Hopscotch Lollipop Sunday Surprise and shows a growth from their rough and ready acoustic sessions to a rather more polished pop-rock sound which would peak rather wonderfully with Starjob in 2004 which also turned out to be their swansong. Sadly the first time I saw the band was also to be the last as Denis Flemion drowned whilst swimming with family in Wind Lake, Racine County in 2012. I often think about that performance and how much I sang and laughed, sometimes at the band and sometimes at the faces of the friends I took that didn't know them. Thanks Denis.
