Don't Pass Me By

Don't Pass Me By

by The Beatles

Ringo Starr's first recorded composition was written several years before its 1968 release on the White Album. "I wrote Don't Pass Me By when I was sitting round at home. I only play three chords on the guitar and three on the piano. I was fiddling with the piano - I just bang away - and then if a melody comes and some words, I just have to keep going. That's how it happened: I was just sitting at home alone and Don't Pass Me By arrived. We played it with a country attitude. It was great to get my first song down, one that I had written. It was a very exciting time for me and everyone was really helpful, and recording that crazy violinist was a thrilling moment." Ringo Starr

Kansas City

Kansas City

by The Beatles

All the band were big "Little Richard" fans and saw him in concert singing this "mash-up" of two songs, Kansas City with Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey and pinched it for themselves!! Their version on "Beatles For Sale" (UK) & "Beatles VI" (US) was recorded in a single take!!! This live film is from the "Shindig" TV programme in '64. Paul has said, "I could do Little Richard's voice, which is a wild, hoarse, screaming thing; it's like an out-of-body experience. You have to leave your current sensibilities and go about a foot above your head to sing it. You have to actually go outside yourself. It's a funny little trick and when you find it, it's very interesting."

Too Much Time on my Hands

Too Much Time on my Hands

by Styx

This song was very true for me when it was released. I believe I had an 8 Track of this album jammed into the dash of my Dad's Mercury for awhile. It certainly doesn't represent my life at this point but it is wonderfully nostalgic. #Styx

A Day in the Life

A Day in the Life

by The Beatles

** JAM 100 ** Thank you everyone who has commented or listened to our Beatlemaniac Jams. When we started this little side-project nearly a year ago, we had no idea of how it would be received. We are very happy how much love there still is on TIMJ for The Beatles. We both have had a lot of fun and learnt so much about The Fabs during this time. It has just confirmed to us that they still are the most important band ever. So a great big THANK YOU from Naty and Mike - we love you people!!!! As a special treat, here's a favourite song we've been storing up for you....<3

The Night Before

The Night Before

by The Beatles

From the Help! film and album released in 1965 and written mainly by Paul. Features John on electric piano and some great guitar playing. Stories differ as to who played the two lead guitar pieces, some say Paul, double-tracked. Others say, it was a joint George and Paul effort - either way it's pretty FAB!! Sadly, this is one of the many Beatles songs that was never performed live by the band. Macca played it at a gig in 2011, saying it was the first time he had performed the song in concert!!! We think this is an over-looked gem. Sorry, this is a clip from the film, so the track is slightly interrupted in the middle - all the straight versions are restricted!!!

Money

Money

by The Beatles

It's easy to forget that The Fabs first few albums, were laden with cover versions, of early R & B, Motown and R & R. The Beatles did a great deal to introduce us, to music from Black, American artists. This track is from the album "With The Beatles", released in November '63 in the UK. 6 out of the 14 tracks on the album were covers, which included "You Really Got A Hold On Me", "Please Mr Postman" and a rousing version of Barrett Strong's "Money" (co-written by Berry Gordy), which closed the album. We love this live version, from 1963, where the band is rocking (got to love George's little shimmy at 1:05!) and the audience is going absolutely bananas! Wait for the crescendo @ 2:22!!!! This is what Beatlemania was all about. So......OK, as loud as you like.....!

Country Blues (I Feel Like Going Home)

Country Blues (I Feel Like Going Home)

by Muddy Waters

Muddy Waters was first recorded at the Stovall Plantation in Mississippi by Alan Lomax and John Work for Nashville's Fisk University and the Library of Congress. Lomax was primarily in charge of the recording equipment while Work interviewed the performers, so it was on 31st August 1941 that John Work wrote in his note book the name of the first song performed by a young McKinley Morganfield who called himself Muddy Waters as "Country Blues", Alan Lomax recorded the name as "I Feel Like Going Home" in his notes and that was the name of the song that Muddy recorded several times later in his career, but somehow the name on this first recording was "Country Blues"......

Sportin' Life Blues

Walter Brown ("Brownie") McGhee (1915 – 1996) a blues singer and guitarist, best known for player with the harmonica player Sonny Terry. But here he is solo singing Sporting Life Blues, one of my favorite versions of this old Blues song which many have covered.
