Spazz (Elastik Band cover)

Spazz (Elastik Band cover)

by thebrotheregg

Spazz was another bizarre song that came out in the late 60s by a group that had no other notoriety besides this song. I can't call the Elastik Band a one-hit wonder, since Spazz was never a hit. But it did become an underground classic. I was delighted to find this live performance of Spazz by a group called TheBrotherEgg (caps added). They stay pretty faithful to the original version. I love the go-go dancers that appear about halfway through. The sound quality here isn't perfect, but the performance deserves to be seen and the song heard. (Well, maybe that's debatable. Nonetheless, here's Spazz.)

Paralyzed

Paralyzed

by The Legendary Stardust Cowboy

Sorry the video quality isn't too good on this one, but it's good enough. I first heard this song on our local FM "underground" station in 1967 or 1968. As I liked (and still like) music that is a little off kilter, "Paralyzed" immediately caught my attention. Understandably, the song didn't get much airplay, and I never really knew who performed it. I tried to track it down occasionally through the years with no luck. These days, of course, virtually everything is findable, and I finally reconnected with the song. Unbeknownst to me until recently. the Legendary Stardust Cowboy inspired David Bowie to name Ziggy Stardust as he did. (You can find a YouTube video of him explaining it to Jools Holland.) Anyway, before Jams archives itself on September 26th, I wanted to expose my friends and followers to Paralyzed by the Legendary Stardust Cowboy.

A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request

A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request

by Steve Goodman

Tony from Chicago introduced me to this song and to Steve Goodman. Goodman was a folk singer and composer probably best known for his song City of New Orleans. You may be familiar with Arlo Guthrie's rendition of it. Like all good North Siders, Goodman loved the Cubs. His song Go Cubs Go is regularly sung at Cubs games. He wrote and performed this song in 1981. Some of the references may be lost on younger folks, but the sentiment is clear. Goodman suffered from leukemia. He succumbed to the disease in 1984 at the age of 36. He knew his time was limited when he wrote Last Request. He faced his ordeal with humor and grace. That's why I wanted to be sure to post this Jam before TIMJ closes down next month.

Here's one of countless examples of Frank Zappa's guitar prowess. Chunga's Revenge itself isn't that great of a composition, but it does give Frank an opportunity to get warmed up at the beginning of a show in 1980. It starts out a little slow. Hang in there beyond the first 1:30 or so.

Open the Door, Richard

Open the Door, Richard

by Walter Brown with the Tiny Grimes Sextet

"Open the Door, Richard" was written in 1946, based on a vaudeville routine made famous by Dusty Fletcher. The recording made by co-composer Jack McVea became quite popular. Demand for the song was high. It was re-recorded and performed often by other performers of the day and over the next decade (including Louis Jordan, Count Basie, the Three Flames, the Pied Pipers, the Merry Macs, the Charioteers, Jimmy Durante, Burl Ives, Jack Benny, Harry Edison, Melvin Smith, Billy Lee Riley, and others) who often put their own spin on the narrative. The song was referred to in Looney Tunes cartoons of 1947 and 1949. The song is now an almost forgotten cultural artifact of the late 40s, the 50s and even into the 60s. The version here by Walter Brown is more risque than most. (reference: Wikipedia)

Skinny Legs and All

by Joe Tex

I'm not sure if the Spaniards in 1968 knew what to make of Joe Tex. Tex and his band put their all into this performance despite a sterile TV setting and probably an uncomprehending audience. The man had some moves! Crank it up... the sound volume is mixed low.

Clementine

by Bobby Darin

This is the old song we all learned just a little bit as kids. In researching for a cast, I was surprised to discover at least three very good and very different renditions of Clementine: one by Bing Crosby & the Music Maids from 1941, one by Neil Young & Crazy Horse from 2012 (which was my jam last week), and this one by Bobby Darin from 1960. Unlike the Neil Young version, here Darin seems awfully cheery about Clementine and her untimely end. Hope you like it!
