Goodbye

Goodbye

by Mary Hopkin

Folk Music & the Archiving of TIMJ. So this is goodbye, or at least be seeing you. I've really enjoyed putting up my various folk music series. If TIMJ had continued I planned a second "A-Z of Folk Music". I've also enjoyed curating other peoples posts with the #Folk tag. Thanks to all those who followed me and all the comments. Mary Hopkins has such a sweet voice, but stepped back from the Music Business to have a family. She still works, often with her children, but below the public horizon #Goodbye #Hopkins #TIMJ

by The Corries

Folk Music and songs of farewell. So we have three more weeks of TIMJ. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here, posting my musical series and curating the folk posts on TIMJ at #Folk :). I've looked forward to my weekly task and to surfing the other posts for musical gems. I'm going to spend the last few weeks saying goodbye to everyone who's enjoyed my concept. I've also signed up on www.letsloop.com and would be happy to see any of those I follow or who follow me there. #Folk #Leaving #Corries #TIMJ

John Barleycorn

John Barleycorn

by The Young Tradition

Folk and the Legend of John Barleycorn. This version by The Young Tradition (1965-69), is very traditional, sung without instrumental accompaniment, and was drawn especially from the music of the Copper Family from Sussex. It links the Folk Revival of which Peter Bellamy, Royston Wood and Heather Wood were part, with the original music tradition of the Coppers which stretched back well into the 19th century. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Young_Tradition https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copper_Family #Folk  #Barleycorn #FolkRevival #TheYoungTradition

by Galley Beggar

Folk Music & The Legend of John Barleycorn. Galley Beggar are exemplars of 1970's Folk Rock. Yet they are in fact 21st century "Twenty Nothings" from SE London and Kent. I own a couple of their Albums and they are one of a few bands I've seen live recently and actually spoken to. They have a new album Silence and Tears out now -well worth the investment. http://www.galleybeggar.com/wordpress/ #Folk #Barleycorn #GalleyBeggar #NewBands

John Barleycorn

John Barleycorn

by "Knights Of The Occasional Table"

Folk Music & The Legend of John Barleycorn. This is a track from John Barleycorn 2000. I'd probably call it Neo-Folk, but the term Cyber-Folk is also used. "“John Barleycorn 2000” is the fourth L.P from Knights of the Occasional Table since they came into being in late 1992 and contains their most exciting and accomplished material to date. The Knights, always eager to bring together the many influences they have, have invented “Cyberfolk”, which is more than just folk tunes played on sequencers, but rather a development of elements that their music possessed from the outset." http://www.last.fm/music/Knights+Of+The+Occasional+Table/+wiki #Folk #Barleycorn #KnightsOfTheOccasionalTable #Sequencers

Slouching Towards Bethlehem (based on a poem by W. B. Yeats)

by Joni Mitchell (live, 1998)

Folk Music & the Widening Gyre. Joni Mitchell suffered a brain aneurysm in March 2015. According to old friend David Crosby she is slowly recovering but remains aphasic. anyone wanting to give her their best wishes can do so at www.WeLoveYouJoni.com . Meanwhile her song "Slouching towards Bethlehem", based on W.B. Yeats 1919 poem "The Second Coming" about the birth of an Anti-Christ, is more relevant than ever. The Oak

The Oak

by Steve Knightley and Bob Devereux

Folk Music & #Electionjam . "The Scribbled Oak" became the symbol of the Conservative Party in 2006, replacing the Freedom Torch. Its origins however are much older, the original Tory Party used the Royal Oak in remembrance of King Charles II escape, hiding in an Oak after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. The symbolic importance of the Oak is emphasised in the words of Knightley's song. As a One Nation Conservative I also respect its symbolic value. #Folk #Electionjam #Oak #SteveKnightley

Waltzing Matilda

Waltzing Matilda

by Lucy Ward

Folk Music & WWI. The Gallipoli Campaign was designed to knock the Ottoman Empire out of the War by capturing Constantinople and opening up the southern route to the Russians. Australian&NZ trops took part as the Australian New Zealand Army Corps, known as the ANZACs. The first landings started on 25th April 1915. The Allies faced massive resistance from the Turks and following almost 188,000 casualties of various sorts the task force withdrew on 9th January 1916. Ottoman casualties were slightly less than 175,000. Every year on 25th April Lucy Ward has been invited to sing this poignant Eric Bogle song at the annual ANZAC Day service held at the Gallipoli Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas. She seldom performs it in concert, however April 25th 2014 was the final date of her band's debut tour and she decided to perform the song to a packed house at The Grand Pavilion in Matlock Bath. #Folk #Gallipoli #Ottoman #WWI #LucyWard

Folk & Current Affairs. I recently fought the Battle of Worcester 1651 using the new "Pike & Shot" computer game from Slithereen and had a great time. http://slitherine.com/games/pike_shot_pc The battle was the end result of a self-interested, authoritarian, bigoted Scottish regime attempting to impose a weak and unpopular ruler on the English. Flowers Of The Forest

Flowers Of The Forest

by Fairport Convention

Folk Music and Scottish History. The Battle of Flodden Field, 9th September 1513. In response to the "Ould Alliance" James IV invaded Northumbria to distract Henry VIII from his military campaigns against France. It was Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey commander in chief of the English Army of the North who confronted James at Flodden. The Scots King rashly led a great force down the hill towards Surrey. James was speared to death just yards from the Earl. With him died the majority of the Scots nobility and perhaps 10,000 commoners. The battle confirmed once and for all the superiority of English arms in the British Isles. The tune is an ancient Scottish Air, the words were written by Jean Elliot in imitation of a border ballad #Folk #Scotland #England #BetterTogether #Indyref #Flodden #JamesIV #Elliot #Scottishweek

Montrose

Montrose

by Steeleye Span

Folk music and Scottish History. James Graham 5th Earl, later 1st Marquis of Montrose (1612-50). James was unfortunate enough to be born at a time when religious bigotry and political totalitarianism linked arms in the form of the Presbyterian Covenanters. Montrose joined the Covenant to resist the imposition of the Book of Common Prayer and Episcopalianism in the Bishops War (1638-39). But with the start of the Civil War in England in 1642, he sought aid from Charles I to secure Scotland for the Crown. Montrose returned to Scotland a Marquis, but with no army. However he united the Highland clans in a "spectacular" insurgency. His victories, which took his opponents by surprise, are remembered in military history for their tactical brilliance. By 1646 "the Great Montrose" was in control of Scotland. But the defeat of the Royalists in England ended in him fleeing abroad. #Folk #Scotland #BetterTogether #TheStuarts #Covenanters #DeathJam

The Bonnie Earl O' Moray

The Bonnie Earl O' Moray

by Five Hand Reel

Folk Music and Scottish History. The 2nd Earl of Moray (c.1565 - 1592) was a powerful Scottish noble and distant relative of James VI. The Earl's ambition to become the most powerful landowner in North-East Scotland brought him into conflict with the Earl of Huntly. He also became tangentially involved with the alleged witchcraft-tinged conspiracy against the King and his Danish wife by Francis, Earl of Bothwell. On 7th February 1592 Moray was awaiting an audience with King James in Edinburgh when he was murdered by followers of Huntly at Donibristle. The Ballad (Child 181) contains the original "Mondegreen",the mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase as a result of near-homophony, in a way that gives it a new meaning. #Folk #Scotland #BeterTogether #JamesVI&I #LadyMondegreen

Border Pipe tune/Lock the Door Lariston

Border Pipe tune/Lock the Door Lariston

by The Clansmen

Folk Music and Scottish History. Throughout the 15th and 16th Century the borders of Scotland and England were "debatable lands". Cattle raids, long standing feuds, murder and revenge were the order of the day. On both sides powerful families, with their own bands of retainers fought out a struggle more or less independent of Edinburgh or London. No invading army whether English or Scots was complete without its complement of Border Horse. This song name-checks some of the key families, which included, the Armstrongs, the Elliotts, the Grahams, Kerrs and Humes. #Folk #Scotland #Borderpipes #Reivers  #ScottishReferendum

Moving on from my Military History theme it is now only 6 weeks until the Scottish Independence Referendum on 18th September 2014. So MyJams over the next few weeks will relate to Scottish History and folk music. This Is Why We Fight

This Is Why We Fight

Folk Music & Military History. Child Soldiers. Historically children were often involved in military activities, just as they were in all other aspects of life. By the 20thC concerns about the use of children in the Wars of Liberation and Civil conflicts led to International legislation to outlaw the practice. Despite this: “ In over twenty countries around the world, children are direct participants in war. Denied a childhood and often subjected to horrific violence, an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 children are serving as soldiers for both rebel groups and government forces in current armed conflicts.” - Human Rights Watch, July 2007 #Folk #MilitaryHistory #ChildSoldiers

The Roast Beef of Old England

The Roast Beef of Old England

by Sung &Arr. P.M.Adamson

Folk Music & Military History. The British Empire was based on its exploitation of sea-power and allegedly the superior nature of the Englishman's diet. March To Battle

March To Battle

by The Chieftains

Folk music and Military History. The Mexican-American War (1846-48) was a direct result of the US annexation of Texas in 1845, a territory still claimed by Mexico despite its declaration of independence in 1836. Among the American recruits were many Irish Catholics, fresh from the aftermath of the Potato Famine. Mistreatment, military anti-Catholic prejudice and increasing sympathy for their fellow Mexican Catholics led to desertions. Many joined the "St. Patrick's Battalion" (initially an artillery unit), preferring to fight with the Catholic Mexicans against the Protestant Americans, the San Patricios were the only group of deserters in American history to band together in the service of a foreign enemy. #Folk #MilitaryHistory #mexicoVusa

The D-Day Dodgers

The D-Day Dodgers

by Hamish Imlach

Folk Music & Military History. When Allied Forces stormed ashore in Normandy on 6th June 1944 they were not the first to take on the Axis in western Europe. For almost a year British, Commonwealth, American and other Allied forces had been fighting in Italy. Operations Husky and Avalanche landed troops in Sicily and then on the mainland. Some of the toughest fighting of WWII took place in battles like Anzio and Monte Cassino. Conservative MP Lady Astor's jibe about these forces having "dodged" D-Day prompted Lance-Sergeant Harry Pynn of the Tank Rescue Section, 19 Army Fire Brigade based in Bologna to write a version of this song in November 1944. The tune is that used for "Lili Marlene". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-Day_Dodgers #Folk #MilitaryHistory #D-Day #Italy

Twa Recruiting Sergeants

Twa Recruiting Sergeants

Folk Music and Military History. Unlike the Royal Navy, recruitment in the British Army was a process of flattery, blandishment, inducement and intoxication. Accepting the Kings Shilling was done by thousands seeking adventure and escape from the poverty and restrictions of civilian life. #Folk #MilitaryHistory #Highlander #Sergeant #Shilling

Long Ride Into Town

Long Ride Into Town

by The Architects

More Military History. This is a late commemoration of ANZAC Day, 25th April. World War I, following the disaster at Gallipoli , Australian & New Zealand troops were transferred to Egypt to prepare for the Sinai and Palestine campaign against the Ottoman Turks. On 31st October 1917 the Expeditionary force was ordered to attack the right of the southern Palestine line at Beersheba. The video depicts the mounted infantry charge by the Australian Mounted Division's 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments (4th Light Horse Brigade) with bayonets in their hands, their only weapon for mounted attack, as their rifles were slung across their backs. While part of the two regiments dismounted to attack entrenchments on Tel es Saba defending Beersheba, the remainder of the light horsemen continued their charge into the town, capturing the place and part of the garrison as it was withdrawing. #Folk #MilitaryHistory #ANZAC #WWI #Turks

Folk Music & Military History. Cavalry were historically the third oldest (after infantry and chariotry) and the most mobile of the combat arms. A soldier in the cavalry is known by a number of designations such as cavalryman, horseman or trooper. The series of conflicts known as the Napoleonic Wars 1793-1815 were the defining moment for many songs of loss and regret. #Folk #Cavalry #LightHorse #Napoleon
