Style It Takes

Style It Takes

by John Cale and Lou Reed

I recently acquired 'Songs for Drella', Cale/Reed's tribute to Andy Warhol, and although I like listening to the album as a whole, this is the song that always gets stuck in my head. Lovely instrumentation, simple, memorable melody, John Cale's quirky, recognisable voice singing lyrics that take you through Warhol's work... I didn't think I was going to like this record as much as I do.

Sea Of Sine Waves

Sea Of Sine Waves

I like the way this develops. The harmonies remind me of something we did in the choir I used to be in. I've liked his stuff for some years now but only just read that K. Polar is the alter-ego of a classical violist.

Villain

Villain

by 8:58

I had been in danger of playing the 8:58 (Paul Hartnoll) album to death a while back - and then I didn't listen to it for a month while I was ill. Great to come back to it again today - still The Album Of The Year, for me. I've already jammed my favourite track from it - the 7 minutes and 37 seconds of pure joy that is Cemetery (feat. Fable), but here's another track with guest vocals, this time deliberately overwrought ones from Ed Harcourt - there's also an instrumental version of this track that I used to prefer, but I have come round to the vocal version and now like it just as much (though I do love the vocals-as-instrumentation that come to the fore in the instrumental).

1967

1967

by The Auteurs

I've been absent from ThisIsMyJam while I've been ill. I can't really listen to music when ill: I mentally sing it and it hurts my throat/sinuses. Still not well, really, but I'm back on music. Anyway. I've been re-reading Luke Haines' Bad Vibes, and it reminded me I blimmin' love the Auteurs. I can hear Black Box Recorder in this 1999 track's arrangement. 'Fun' fact: 1967 was LH's birth year.

Wax and Wane

Wax and Wane

by Cocteau Twins

There are better Cocteau Twins albums than 'Garlands': 'Treasure', 'Head Over Heels' and 'Blue Bell Knoll', for starters. Nevertheless, it's a good album. This track has a hint of early Dead Can Dance about it, though it was actually earlier than DCD's first album.

Dead

Dead

by They Might Be Giants

This week I've been rediscovering the wonderful 'brand new record / For 1990 / They Might Be Giants' brand new album / Flood!' - only ever had it on cassette and even though I hadn't listened to it in full since about 2002 until this week, I still know it so well. Shame that restrictions on linking to the studio recordings mean I can only jam live versions... It was between this one, a half-recording of We Want A Rock and a live Someone Keeps Moving My Chair with singalong audience.
