Kedvesem (Live Orchestra)

by ByeAlex

Yes, I know the song was my jam for the last week, but this just turned up on the ByeAlex Facebook page. A sublime version of a stunning song. Managed to track down the album "Szörpoholista" this week and I am just stunned. Hungarian Indie pop never sounded so good.

Kedvesem (Zoohacker Remix)

by ByeAlex

Second showing for this tune. It's simple elegance never fails to take my breath away. Yes, it's from last years Eurovision Song Contest, but would that more were like this rather than the dreadful europap we're usually subjected to. Finally managed to get a copy of the album this morning, and it has totally blown me away... Y'know, it's so sonically perfect, I don't even want a translated english version.

Sons Of Pioneers

Sons Of Pioneers

by Japan

I always had a love/hate thing with Japan. I think I liked the idea of them more than the execution. I'm still sniffy about "Adolescent Sex", "Obscure Alternatives" and "Quiet Life", although they all have their moments. But "Gentlemen Take Polaroids" made the leap from "half arsed new-romantic art rock" to "Holy Shit, that's awesome!". Somehow, they managed to be weird, uncompromising and completely "out there" while having fantastic pop hits. Japan gigs were a strange affair, too. Many teens wanting to scream and wail in one half of the venue, well beard stroking art hippies brooded in the other side. All the while, the band seemed entirely indifferent to either contingent and played note perfect copies of the albums. Baffling and completely alienating. Then Came Tin Drum, which upped the alienation ante. An album that is practically perfect and answers to no-one. Sons of Pioneers is a stately track that unfolds at it's own pace. Simply beautiful.

Add It Up

Add It Up

by Violent Femmes

A song that will always remind me of Jane. She played this once on our old radio show. Pretty much everyone involved loved the Violent Femmes and when it started, we all spontaneously started singing. Everyone was screaming and dancing round the studio, having a brilliant time and then it comes to the "why can't I get just one fuck" line.... we all sang along, oblivious, and then with horror, all realised, at the same this wasn't the radio friendly version and delicate and genteel citizens of Sheffield had just been exposed to second naughtiest of words... As Jane was the only one mic-ed and she was driving the show, she had the job of trying to make a sincere apology while eight other people were on the floor, hysterically laughing and the dreaded "red phone line"- the direct number from the station managers office - blinked angrily... fun times.

I Believe in a Thing Called Love

I Believe in a Thing Called Love

by The Darkness

It a bit annoying that I can't find the version of this song that I want. AS much as I love the original here, the is a version by a band called, believe it or not, "Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Darkness" who did an EP featuring three covers of The Darkness in the style of OMD/electroclash. "I Believe . . ." had Enola Gay threaded through it. That said, this is one of the funniest song and videos ever. I'll see if I can upload the OMDarkness version (as long as I can work out how).

White Horses

White Horses

by Jacky

As I reach *THAT* age, I can't help by reminisce. Oddly enough, I'm not actually that fond of the TV show, it was just shown during pretty much every holiday, along with Robinson Crusoe, Belle and Sebastian and The Lone Ranger. The theme, however, can moisten my eyes from the moment that bloody horn sounds at the beginning. Wonderful tune.

Being Boiled (Lost Version)

A stone cold classic. Not sure of the provenance of this version but even it isn't authentic, it's a bloody great version. Time Burns

Time Burns

by OMD

I was always a fan of Orchestral Manoeuvres In the Dark even through the dodgy swish dinner party phase they went through. I will admit I preferred them when they were a lot more experimental . . . The return saw them mucking about and experimenting a fair bit. This was the b-side of a rather standard OMD pop-song/dinner party tune. Fab.

The Number One Song In Heaven

The Number One Song In Heaven

by Sparks

Sparks. Best band in the history of the universe. FACT. I'm putting this track up specifically as it is related to the previous Boney M track. They have a common factor which is one Keith Forsey; something of a legend a who features on many of my favourite tunes. What I assumed to be a "70's drum sound", used by different bands turns out to be the same drummer. He worked Sparks, Cerrone, Giorgio Moroder, Boney M as well as multitudinous disco bands and on many 80's soundtracks (Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, The Breakfast Club, etc.) The man is a legend and, it turns out, instantly recognisable. This song is in two parts, both display his astonishing drumming skill, although side one of Cerrone 4, which includes the worldwide hit "Supernature", is essentially and excuse to showcase his drum skills and leads into a 3 minute drum solo. Genius.

He Was A Steppenwolf

He Was A Steppenwolf

by Boney M.

Yeah, I know. It's Boney M, but I have become increasingly enamoured of the "Nightflight to Venus" album for it's barking audacity. This track stands out as the track that basically shows you what Frank Farian could have achieved had he not had a fixation with pointless dancing men and europop; sounding for all the world like it's a "Psychedelic Soul" outtake. Brilliant. Seriously. Listen.

Faded Flowers

Faded Flowers

by Shriekback

Still one of my favourite hopelessly underrated bands. it baffles me as to why they aren't absolute megastars. Still going strong and with a post-reformation phalanx of killer albums. The band inspired me to the point that I did an degree show piece (a sonic installation) named after one of their songs - Sea Theory. This song, is from an earlier album, the ground breaking "Oil and Gold". Ah, Barry . . . when the new album due?

Then She Appeared

Then She Appeared

by XTC

My favourite track from not my favourite album by XTC - who are one of my favourite bands. Too many favourites? Possibly, but who cares. This album has just had an amazing make over and is available as a remixed, remastered DVD/CD package that includes a 5.1 mix, demos, videos, b-sides, home movies . . . it an amazing purchase. A lot of the things I didn't like about the album have been ironed out and it is now almost perfect. I still think it's over long and could lose a couple of tracks, although whereas last week, I could tell you which tracks should be removed, it's a much more difficult job, post remix. Buy it. Really.

Lithium

Lithium

by The Polyphonic Spree

Sacred Cow time. I like Nirvana. Sometimes the angstyness got a bit much and I got the feeling Cobain cynically manipulated his mental illness to equate into sales, but...y'know. I like Nirvana. But I love The Polyphonic Spree more and this cover is an absolute joy. Being bipolar, I get the lyric and relate to it, a lot, and as much as I like Nirvana's version, there's a joy and happiness on the Polyphonic Spree's version that basically tells you that it might be a bit weird, but you're okay. You can be happy. On the section "I like it - I'm not gonna crack I miss you - I'm not gonna crack I love you - I'm not gonna crack I killed you - I'm not gonna crack" Listen out for the triumphant horns. They make me shiver with delight every time. 100,000 times better than Nirvana.

Violence Grows

Violence Grows

by Fatal Microbes

My mum had always thought my taste in music was suspect. From the time she tried to shield me from Russell Mael bouncing around in"hot pants" on Top of the Pops to screaming when those naughty Sex Pistols said a rude word on telly. I found these things funny, Mum did not. There was friction, but then that's what pop music is about... the moment she began to despair and claim I was "heading down the path of degeneracy" was when she came into my room while I was listening to Annie Nightingale while this was playing. Naturally, her reaction sealed the deal. The next day I was straight along Freeman Street in Grimsby to Humber Records to by the little beauty.

You Used To Be A Man

You Used To Be A Man

by New Young Pony Club

I've always had a love/hate thing going on with the the New Young Pony Club. Their singles have been exquisitely icy, austere, arch and wonderful, but the two albums just failed to get me excited. Well, after many line-up changes and and quick rebranding - as NYPC - not only have they released two of the finest singles this year (Hard Knocks and this one) but the eponymous album, released last week, is bloody storming! This is the NYPC album, I knew they were capable of making. Magnificent stuff.

The Future Suite

by Sudden Sway

Brilliantly subversive and an hilarious pisstake of the excesses of big business and the rise of Corporate Culture in the 80's. This is Thatchers Britain as Corporate anthem with love songs to credit cards (Omnispend Sway), a Self Financed Youth jingle, the most convoluted metaphor for the arms race, predictions of Facebook and mental illness caused by application of the wrong makeup. Losing My Mind

Losing My Mind

by Liza Minnelli & Pet Shop Boys

Possibly the gayest tune in my music collection. Liza + Pet Shop Boys + Steven Sondheim = FABULOUS!!!! I think it could only be gayer if the Village People were doing backing vocals, but then the PSB managed to make a Village People song sound gayer still by inclusion of a Broadway style male voice choir . . . and a load of subversive Soviet iconography...it should probably be reissued as a benefit single for the fight against Putin's war on Gay men and women. But this is about "Losing my Mind". Great tune, great arrangement and the only Minelli I own. Honest guv.

I've always had a soft spot for OMITD, even when they lost IT, they were still listenable. During their most experimental times, they would often end albums with a peculiar love song to inanimate objects - fighter planes, sea forts and this one about an oil refinery. A dreamy cacophony.

Some Girls

Some Girls

by Rachel Stevens

Part One of a Series of Unexpected Pop Tunes You Never Thought I'd Like and Why. - I'm always kind of torn about the whole Gary Glitter thing. Yes the man is horrific and his crimes are completely abhorrent. Lets get that clear from the off. However, I used to love Gary Glitter when I was growing up. Everyone did. What particularly galls me about the situation is that Gary Glitter was the front man for a far greater talent: Mike Leander ,who wrote and produced all of Glitter's hits during hit run as King of Pop. That arsehole has completely sullied Mike Leander's reputation. Rachel Stevens 'Some Girls' is essentially an homage to the glam/glitterbeat era. it's a Glitter/Leander tune I can listen to without being angered by Glitter. Mike Leander:legend.

We Have Explosive

We Have Explosive

by The Future Sound of London

Many years ago, I decided I needed to get fit (always a bad move". I thought about it and decided that as I hated the gym, swimming and sport in general, probably the only thing I could do was skip in my back yard. SO I got a rope and set about it. The remix CD of this was exactly 30 minutes long, the exact length of the recommended length of time for exercise. I went at it like a madman, did 30 mins straight and then blacked out. I fell over, smacked my head on the step and concussed myself. And they say exercise is good for you.

House of the King

by Focus

I'm watching Dara O'Briain's Science Club and thinking how much it reminds me of two of my favourite defunct science programmes; namely Tomorrow's World and Yorkshire TV's "Don't Ask Me!" which featured Magnus Pike, Miriam Stoppard, David Bellamy and Rob Buckman (who was also responsible for one of my all time favourite forgotten TV programmes "The Pink Medicine Show). Moviestar

Moviestar

by Harpo

My friend Colin reminded me of this gem from 1975. A tragic song disguised as jaunty pop. It was Harpo's only hit in the UK and he was pretty much dismissed as a one hit wonder despite being huge elsewhere on the continent and releasing music until at least 2005. Backing vocals courtesy of Abba's Frida with Stig Andersson providing the studio. In all honesty, I wanted to put up a lesser known track "My Bubblegum Gun", but it doesn't appear to be on youtube.
