Ceremony

Ceremony

by New Order (feat Ian McCulloch)

I was looking for a different song when I found this. I saw this done in an encore of an Echo/New Order double bill at Irvine Meadows in 1987. The venue had already turned on the house lights, so the bands just turned up their stage monitors and went on with it anyhow. Since there was no security controlling things, I climbed my way to about the 8th row and saw it all up close.

My Favorite Drug

Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)

Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)

by Snoop Doggy Dogg feat. Nate Dogg, Warren G & Kurupt

Not the best Snoop Dogg song, but the funniest to hear as a radio edit. Every other word (and sometimes more) are muted in some sections. The few times I heard it on the radio I was laughing at how much the groove of the song was ruined trying to make it playable without massive FCC fines.

September Gurls

September Gurls

by Big Star

Thanks to an old friend (Susan/Ann) I know that while 80s bands like REM, the Bangles (obviously, in this case) and The Replacements influenced 90s to current Indie bands, these are the guys they listened to back in the 70s. Or you may know them as the guys who did That 70s Show theme song. The cover art is wrong, which I just find funny.

Dead Man's Party

Dead Man's Party

by Oingo Boingo

From the 80s to the early 90s this guys had the most epic Halloween shows in Los Angeles. At first on Halloween night at the Palladium, later in multiple nights at the Irvine Meadows (aka Verizon) Amphitheater, which morphed into Dia De Los Muertos concerts spanning multiple dates in October/November. Sadly, Danny Elfman's brilliance at songwriting lead him away from his rock band, and into the cozy embrace of Hollywood filmmaking.

Rally Round (Live)

Rally Round (Live)

by Steel Pulse

My second favorite reggae group of all time... but unlike the Wailers, I got to see them live. Even better was that the Untouchables opened for them at what was then known as the Universal Amphitheater, later as the Gibson Amphitheater, and now known as history. What struck me, compared to most concerts I went to as a teen, was how whole families would go to the reggae show; from toddlers to grandparents. I see that a lot more now... but that might have something to do with being over 40.

Deliverance

Deliverance

by The Mission (UK)

This was one of those bands I discovered by going to the show mostly for the opener. The Wonderstuff was the warm-up act at the Hollywood Palladium, and I loved them dearly, but The Mission blew them off the stage. I serendipitously ran into a bunch of friends at that show and had an amazing time; with Craig Adams' booming baselines reverberating in my chest, I was an instant fan for life.
