The best thing I did today was add Abner Jay as a seed to my "Real Music Ain't Dead Yet" pandora station (http://www.pandora.com/station/play/2480359317664888959). This was the first song to pop up. A gem I've never heard.

by Oil Boom
a rock'n'roll dance song from Dallas-based Oil Boom. Saw these guys in a smoke filled bar in Ft. Worth with only a few folks in the crowd but they rocked nonetheless. Played a few R.L Burnside covers, too.

by J. Roddy Walston and the Business
When I first heard this track I thought it was Kings of Leon return to glory. Then later I thought maybe Sheepdogs. Nope! J. Roddy Walston and the Business getting down.

by Crystal Fighters
The lyrics and the sound of the lyrics (sorry, lacking the fancy word for this reference) meshing with the music is awesome. If you get the chance to see Crystal Fighters in person, jump!

by Abner Jay
"Folk songs tell true stories, but terrible stories--'cause folk are terrible. Terrible songs make big songs. Why do you think kids like rock 'n' roll ? Because it's terrible." - Abner Jay "the last great Southern black minstrel show" Abner Jay knew how to tell terrible stories. He performed as a one man band with a focus on folk blues music in the 1930s to the year of his death in 1993. More people need to hear this great music.

Jim James was playing in Birmingham while I was back in AL; but I missed it. Reminded me of this jam from a Dallas band. Saw these guys at Sundown at Granada and it was just an excellent, chill way to spend an evening.

AFAIK this is the latest from Tristen. New record dropping soon. She's got a knack for hooks: it's my current jam because a catchy line from another song of hers started playing in my head randomly: "Show me how your daddy and your momma made you." Checkout the rest of her jams. My favourite is Avalanche: /watch?v=6eCsov2mVss

by Delta Spirit
I'll be going to First City Festival next weekend. The festival lineup is excellent and promisies to deliver some wonderful soundscapes. One such soundscape is this offering: a slow, acoustic/electric blues/folk jam. One of my favorites. This will be my first time seeing Delta Spirit, surprisingly. They have a more rocking side as well, see: "Streetwalker" and "California."
