Somewhere Else

Somewhere Else

by Jim Bryson

I was thinking of posting something by Kathleen Edwards, then recalled that one of my favourite songs of hers is Somewhere Else, written by her longtime band member Jim Bryson. So I thought I'd post Jim's excellent original version. The scruff driving the car in the video (and sharing the vocals) is Jim Cuddy from one one of Canada's finest bands, Blue Rodeo. Glad to get this song out there while there is still time.

Donimo

Donimo

by Cocteau Twins

The new Mojo has a piece on The Cocteau Twins. Back in the 80s I loved the band, but they haven't registered on my radar since last century. So the article inspired me to revisit their stuff and this came back to me as probably my favourite song from the Cocteaus. Liz Fraser full on in creating vocal sounds that sound like language, but are sounds and textures that sound quite awesomely beautiful.

The Dolphins

The Dolphins

by Fred Neil

There are a fair few covers of Dolphins out there - Tim Buckley did a great version (the first version of the song I ever heard); Billy Bragg's version is pretty good. It's A Beautiful Day made a decent fist of it and I think there are a couple more versions out there. But this is, I think the best, the definitive version. On top of that I love Fred's baritone.

I Can't Imagine

I Can't Imagine

by Shelby Lynne

I posted a song from from Shelby's new album a few weeks ago. But I have to post another - this one, the title track, which has become my favourite song of this year. It's a song I love to the point of insanity. I'm having to ration myself so I don't overdose on it. Rather than the album track, here is a live version of the song, which is rather good too. Love it along with me!

Money Road

Money Road

by Rosanne Cash

We went to see Rosanne playing a duo gig with husband John Leventhal last week. This was at the Union Chapel in Islington, which she says is one of her favourite venues anywhere in the world (loads of musicians love it because of the excellent acoustics to say nothing of visual element provided by the stained glass). They were on great form, clearly enjoying playing and finished their set with this: a song about a place deep in the heart of the south steeped in history and mystery - where Emmett Till met his end; where Robert Johnson is allegedly buried and close to the Tallahatchie Bridge, made so famous by Bobby Gentry. A place called Money Road.

Driving Down Alvarado

Driving Down Alvarado

by Anne McCue

For anyone who has never heard of Anne McCue, she's a musician who owes more to Hendrix than to, say, Joni Mitchell. I finally got to see her a couple of weeks ago. She hadn't played the UK for 11 years and the last time she toured I was away on holiday. Anyway, she played the Green Note in Camden and she was great. She opened her set with this song from her Koala Motel album.

Wreck

Wreck

by The Bittersweets

I came to this by a roundabout route. I was wanting to post Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" (which had come to mind unprompted earlier today and I'd dug it out) but every version I found cannot be played due to restrictions. Thinking that really is a wreck brought this fantastic song to my mind. The Bittersweets are a lovely little band who took a break for a few years but are now recording again. This is probably a better choice than Edmund Fitzgerald anyway. I hope you like it.

Hot Talk

Hot Talk

by Chuck Prophet

My last jam was Chris Smither, a guy I've liked for years but only just seen for the first time. This is Chuck Prophet, who is at the other end of the spectrum - between Green On Red gigs and his appearances with The Mission Express or solo I've probably seen him live more than anyone else and I'm going again this coming Thursday. This is the brilliant Hot Talk from a gig at The Garage in Islington, North London. It was a brilliant gig which I was at and it's the venue next week (the third time he's played there). Can't wait. Chuck should be a mega-star, but in some ways I'm glad he's not. I'd rather see him at The Garage than in an Enormo-Dome. But he obviously doesn't get the reward he and the band deserve. Hope you like it.

When You're Young

When You're Young

by The Jam

I saw Rick Buckler interviewed about his memoir of his time with The Jam (That's Entertainment: My Life In The Jam) last night - he was actually second to Johnny Rogan who was taking about his Ray Davies autobiography, but I enjoyed Rick more. Did you know that he nicked the drum riff from Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water and used it on Down In The Tube Station At Midnight? Anyway, this was always one of my favourite Jam songs. Such a naive age, but I think it still stands up.

by Frazey Ford

What a discovery! Thanks to someone here (sorry I don't recall who it was, but if it was you, Thanks) I discovered Frazey Ford a few weeks ago. I've bought the Indian Ocean album, which I'm loving. So I decided I'd put something up and while searching, what should I find but Frazey covering one of my favourite singers, Bruce Cockburn, performing the song that introduced me to Bruce? On And On It Goes

On And On It Goes

by Mary Chapin Carpenter

I'm not overly impressed with Mary's last album "Songs From The Movie". It's pleasant but not an essential album, being orchestral reworkings of older material. It opens with this song which was also the song that opened her set at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Concert Orchestra behind her. What a fantastic transformation! Live the album (played more or less in the correct sequence) is a magnificent experience. It's one I'll remember for a long, long time. So in the absence of a live orchestral version here is the beautiful original. "You can change a stranger's life by letting yours begin".

Red Army Blues

Red Army Blues

by The Waterboys

This choice comes via a slightly convoluted route. I got a notification that Al Stewart is playing his Past, Present & Future and Year Of The Cat albums in their entirety next year. I used to like Al Stewart a lot, but I went off him completely when I ran into after a gig, said how much I'd enjoyed it and he was insufferably rude in reply. Then I remembered The Waterboys Red Army Blues has a very similar story to Stewart's Roads To Moscow, and is possibly a better song anyway. So here it is in its live glory.

I went to see Ryan last night and he redeemed himself in my eyes for a solo gig from a few years back. Back then he did a solo tour for which he had just one acoustic guitar. That's right, successful musician toured with a single guitar that constantly went out of tune. With the result that too much time was spent on tuning and not enough performing, to say nothing about how this interrupted the flow of the evening. Anyway last night he was great and the second song was this, one of fave RA tunes. I hope you like it too.

Good Luck Charm

Good Luck Charm

Yesterday morning (Thursday) I on my way to work feeling a little p'd off. I'd worked late the night before and here I was already on my way back and to make things worse trains were running late. Whatever album was playing on my MP3 ended. I remembered I'd just got tickets to see The Mastersons in November (here in London) so decided on their new album. A few minutes later, when this the opening, title track had finished I had a big smile on my face. It's got such a joyous sound and epitomises that mystery that music holds for us all in being able to raise our spirits at the most unexpected times. Love the song, love the band and I'm so jealous of Chris Masterson's Gretsch White Falcon (not played in this video). If they are performing down your way, go and see them. Black and White

Black and White

by Hannah Aldridge

Five days ago, I'd never heard of Hannah. On Monday we went to see Holly Williams play (and she was excellent). There wasn't supposed to be a support, but Hannah was a late addition. We took our seats with no expectations. Her first song was pretty good. Support acts usually start and end with their stronger material, so when the second song was even better, I paid more attention. She was wonderful. The whole set was great. This came in the middle, preceded by a great song called Parchman, which would be my Jam, but it is not out there. Judging by the huge queue to buy her CD we weren't the only ones who thought she was great. I have never seen such a big line for a support artist. She is something special. Enjoy the song.

Venceremos (We Will Win)

Venceremos (We Will Win)

by Working Week with Robert Wyatt, Tracey Thorn and Claudia Figueroa

A mid 80s classic. I seem to recall there was a "New Jazz" movement or some such thing, partly the invention of The Face magazine. This is one example that has stood the test of time.
