by Billy Bragg
This is one of my favourite Billy Bragg songs, and this a great performance of it. The guitar work is magnificent - so sparse, inventive, unique and expressive. I think it's this guitar work and the inventiveness of his songcraft that I miss from later Bragg albums. The lyrics are just incredible; astute observations, powerful reminiscences which transport me back to the 80s ("A hot day, the smell of hairspray and the sound of a shower running softly"), witty and poetic lessons and insightful metaphors. ("You're the kind of girl who wants to open up a bottle of pop too early in the journey. Our love went flat, just like that.") Incredible.

I'm really excited about this band. They're really assured, this song is really good and the production values are so wonderfully reminiscent of the late 80s, early 90s shoegaze. Those chorussy guitar lines, hazy washed out female vocals joining in in the chorus, strong singing. Layers of reverb. And that final phrase and melody in the vocals that finishes the song is just wonderful.

I know we're not meant to like this band, but sometimes I remember how good this song is. It got me interested in acid, aged 11, and if bands aren't for that then what are they for?

I absolutely love this song. It's a combination of all the things that makes Austra so amazing. Katie Stelmanis's operatic delivery and unusual vowels, her classically-composed motifs and riffs, progressive progressions, Maya Postepski's awesomely driven and inventive beats, Dorian Wolf's workman-like bass playing, the wisp-like Tasseomancy twins's bewitching harmonies, and beautifully chosen synths lathered in haunted reverb. And the other chap. I don't know what he did but I like him too.
