Trololo

Trololo

by Full Original Version

This is the very last one, so I thought I'd end on a high note (joke). The name "Trololo" is an onomatopoeia of the distinctive way Eduard Khil vocalizes throughout the song. The quirky and catchy video quickly "went viral' and Khil became known as "Mr. Trololo" or "Trololo Man". The song was written by Arkady Ostrovsky. I'm still seeing all my friends on Let's Loop (http://www.letsloop.com/the-loop). Au Revoir... ;-)

Vienna

...a chance for an extra song or two perhaps. I have liked this man for always. Nobody in song portrays the horror of the Vietnam War better than he does in Goodnight Saigon (https://youtu.be/Qjzjhl-QztE), but this is an equally sad, but beautiful song about getting older and still feeling useful. #hopeyoulikeit #timj

Over My Shoulder

Over My Shoulder

by Mike + The Mechanics

Mike Rutherford, the late Paul Young, and the golden voice of Paul Carack joined together to form this supergroup. This song seems a fitting final choice for This Is My Jam as it moves to archive my choices over the last while, and some of the brilliant choices of the friends I've made along the way. I've listened to blues, rock, jazz, Motown/Stax, C&W, pop, some wonderful classical music too. It has sure been an experience. #hopeyoulikeit #timj #ktf See you all at http://www.letsloop.com/

Still remember 'Saturday "All Niter" DJ Bob Dee' giving me a fiver for this on a Saturday way back in history, I had it and he wanted to play it. I think the band were from North Carolina (not really sure). It was a great cover of the Wilson Pickett brilliance though. #hopeyoulikeit #ktf

Couldn't Get It Right

Couldn't Get It Right

by Climax Blues Band

This is a lovely memory for me. This band hailed from Stafford where I live, indeed I knew the lead, Colin Cooper, he had an amazing gravelly voice. Sadly, he died from cancer in 2008, but the band, like all good bands plays on. When this song was first released the band were still called Hipster Image...I've not listened to it in a long time. #hopeyoulikeit

Mad Rush

Mad Rush

by Philip Glass

My final Philip Glass for a while is this wonderful piano piece from 1979. Philip Glass (piano) performs, "Mad Rush," a piece originally written and performed by Glass in honor of the Dalai Lama's visit to North America in 1979. Glass begins by remarking that the legacy of Gandhi can be seen in the work of leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr. and the Dalai Lama, who advocate for nonviolent, social change and by inviting listeners to consider "Mad Rush" as a play between wrathful and peaceful deities. Performance at "Satyagraha: Gandhi's 'Truth Force' in the Age of Climate Change" presented by the Garrison Institute on April 13, 2008 at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York City. #hopeyoulikeit

Didn't It Rain

Didn't It Rain

by Evelyn Freeman

...or Evelyn Freeman and The Exciting Voices to be more precise, all fourteen of them. An amazing woman (born February 13, 1919) is an American musician, songwriter, arranger and educator, who was born the same year that this song was arranged from an old work song by Henry Thacker Burleigh (1896-1949). The versions by Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1948) and Mahalia Jackson (1954) are in that original arrangement, but when Evelyn Freeman, herself a reputed bandleader released it in 1962, she had re-arranged it to this fabulous almost chant-like song. With her husband Tommy Roberts, she also established The Young Saints Scholarships Foundation, a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1967, with the aim of providing free training in singing, dance, drama, television work and associated skills for young people, aged between 5 and 21, in South Central Los Angeles. She'll be 97 next February. I listened to it as a teenager and I always loved it, so I'm jammin' it again. #hopeyoulikeit

Mr. Sandman

Mr. Sandman

by The Chordettes

A bit of pure nostalgia now...the Chordettes were an American female popular singing quartet, usually singing a cappella, and specialising in traditional popular music. The group organised in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, in 1946. The original members of the group were Janet Ertel, Carol Buschmann (her sister-in-law), Dorothy Schwartz, and Jinny Osborn. Janet Ertel married their music director Archie Bleyer and their daughter Jackie later married Phil Everly of The Everly Brothers). #hopeyoulikeit

Naima

Naima

by John Coltrane

"Naima" is a ballad composed by John Coltrane in 1959, and named after his then-wife, Juanita Naima Grubbs. It first appeared on the album Giant Steps, and is notable for its use of a variety of rich chords over a bass pedal. It is mainly made up of a slow, restrained melody, though there is also a brief piano solo. #hopeyoulikeit   Sorry about that, first posting was the short version...

Function At The Junction

Function At The Junction

by Shorty Long

On June 29, 1969, Shorty Long and a friend drowned when their boat capsized on the Detroit River in Michigan. Stevie Wonder played the harmonica at his burial, and placed it on his casket afterwards. Writer Roger Green's epitaph stated: "So there endeth the career of a man who sang what he wanted to sing - everything from the blues to romantic ballads, from wild and crazy numbers to a utopian vision of Heaven on Earth. Short in stature but big in talent, he entertained and amazed us, and finally he inspired us. That says it all really. #hopeyoulikeit

I've chosen this to welcome my boy home for the holidays, this time from New Zealand with his lovely wife. Reach Out I'll Be There/Until You Love Someone

Reach Out I'll Be There/Until You Love Someone

by The Four Tops

You lucky people get another twofer here. 'Reach Out' was of course a massive hit, but the 'B' side was also a great hit and a fabulous song, also appearing on the'On Top' album of 1966. In the second song the wonderful voice is that of the Lawrence Payton. The Tops were the only Motown group never to change their line-up until sadly Payton died. He was to be replaced by Theo Peoples. Next to go was the great Obie Benson, but The Tops had remained together for over forty years. Wonderful!  #hopeyoulikeit  #ktf

Birds

Birds

by Anouk

Throughout my own experiences of the sixty long, long years of the Eurovision Song Contest, I've heard many awful songs, many from the UK going right to the beginning and including some winners. I have only ever really liked three songs. This years 'Heroes' is one of them actually. Maybe I'm just in the mood for it currently. The second was Italy's first entry in fourteen years in 2011, 'Follia d'amore' performed and written by Raphael Gualazzi, a favourite singer of mine. It came second, although it had won competitions elsewhere. The third one is this one by Anouk. It was The Netherland's first final in nine years and came ninth in 2013. It was also written by the singer. #hopeyoulikeit

Many people will be familiar with the clarinet version of this piece, as played beautifully by Richard Stolztman. The piece is Prelude number 8 in Book 1 (of 2) .
